SXSW Performer: Black Mountain (Vancouver, British Columbia)

The members of Vancouver's Black Mountain are graduate students at the School of Classic Rock. The band's self-titled 2005 debut displays an easy-to-spot palette of influences, ranging from Black Sabbath to Blue Cheer, but what makes frontman Stephen McBean and company special is the way the band--replete with howling, distantly spooky vocals and a thick, rather gnomish sense of mournful darkness--creates something wholly new and unexpected out of what is essentially a thoroughly played out genre.
