XM And Sirius Merger Gets OK

March 25, 2008 02:03 PM
XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio received approval March 24 from the Department of Justice to complete their proposed $4.6 billion merger, according to the Los Angeles Times. The DOJ determined that a merged company would not monopolize the market because iPods and other devices are giving people more options for listening to music and other programming in their cars.

Sirius and XM reportedly have touted the merger as a win for satellite radio listeners, who no longer would have to choose between the companies' lineups of exclusive programming. Both companies each have lost billions of dollars battling over customers and expensive programming such as Howard Stern and Major League Baseball.

The Federal Communications Commission still must approve the merger but, according to reports, the FCC rarely rules against the Justice Department.
