Springsteen, E Street Band return to stage with emotional tribute to Danny Federici
Bruce Springsteen resumed his tour on Tuesday (4/22) following the death of E Street Band member Danny Federici.
The show served as a musical tribute to the spirit of Federici, who died April 17th following a long battle with melanoma.
According to published reports, Springsteen and band took the stage in darkness while a video screen played a montage of images of Federici over a recording of "Blood Brothers," a Springsteen song about lifelong bonds, particularly those between him and his band.
The moving tribute continued as the band began their regular set with "Backstreets," a spotlight shining on Federici's un-manned keyboards.
Midway through the set, pianist Roy Bittan strapped on an accordion. According to the Tampa Tribune, Springsteen told the band, "We better get this right. Somebody's watching," as they rolled into "Sandy," a song long associated with Federici's accordion fills.
The show's encore reportedly began with the gospel standard "I'll Fly Away," before roaring into rarities "Rosalita" and "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" along with "Born To Run."
