Trashcan Sinatras (Glasgow, UK)

After scoring hits with the 1990 album "Cake" and 1993's "I've Seen Everything," the Trashcan Sinatras were nearly silenced commercially due to bankruptcy, and lead singer Francis Reader has copped to feelings of hatred toward his band and its willowy, jangle-rock sound for putting him in the situation. When the proverbial weight was lifted, however, the inspiration returned. The band regrouped for its fourth album, appropriately titled "Weightlifting," in 2004. The sprightly quartet funded the album with the help of the Scottish Arts Council. --Christina Fuoco
