Shania Twain, Dixie Chicks Scoop Multiple Awards At CMA Ceremony
Shania Twain was named Entertainer Of The Year and Tim McGraw and the Dixie Chicks took home multiple awards at the 33rd Annual CMA Awards, held Wednesday night at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry House and broadcast live on CBS.
''Come On Over,'' Twain's third album and her second straight collaboration with her husband and producer Robert John ''Mutt'' Lange, has sold more than 10 million copies. That makes Twain the first female country music artist to reach that milestone on two straight albums. She also has emerged as one of country music's top-drawing live acts over the last two years.
The Dixie Chicks took home three awards, including Vocal Group Of The Year. Their hit single ''Wide Open Spaces'' took honors as the best single and best video. It's the second straight year that the trio has taken home two awards.
Two CMAs went to Tim McGraw, who picked up a field-leading seven nominations. His latest CD, ''A Place In The Sun,'' was named Album Of The Year and he also was tapped for Male Vocalist Of The Year. The 3 million-selling hit single ''This Kiss,'' a song recorded by his wife, Faith Hill, won the Song Of The Year award.
The Horizon Award -- which recognizes up-and-coming artists that display significant creative growth, increased sales, critical recognition and live performance professionalism -- went to Jo Dee Messina.
Brooks & Dunn continued their domination of the top duo category by taking home their eighth straight award. Martina McBride, on the strength of the double platinum album ''Evolution,'' got the CMA for Female Vocalist Of The Year.
Picker Randy Scruggs got the CMA for Musician Of The Year. Awards show host Vince Gill's collaboration with Patty Loveless on the single ''My Kind Of Woman/My Kind Of Man'' was honored as Vocal Event Of The Year.
Dolly Parton, Conway Twitty and Johnny Bond were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Alan Jackson brought the crowd to its feet when he sang a few lines of the George Jones hit ''Choices'' at the end of his performance. Jones decided against performing at the awards show after Country Music Association officials asked him to perform an abridged version of the song.
Pop acts met country for two CMA performances: Merle Haggard was joined by Jewel on ``That's the Way Love Goes'' and 'N Sync teamed with Alabama for ''God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You.''
