Briefly: Green Day, Annie Lennox, Toby Keith, Tommy Lee, Fantasia Barrino
Green Day and Annie Lennox will be the guests of honor at the 23rd Annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards.
ASCAP (The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) plans to present Green Day with the ASCAP Creative Voice Award, which is "bestowed upon an ASCAP member or group whose significant career achievements are equally informed by their creative spirit and by their contributions to the role that a creator can play in their community," and Lennox with the ASCAP Founders Award, which honors "pioneering songwriters who have made exceptional contributions to music inspiring and influencing their fellow music creators," according to a press release.
The awards ceremony, which takes place May 22 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, will also honor the songwriters and publishers of ASCAP's most-performed songs of 2005.
Toby Keith will soon head overseas to perform for US troops in Germany and the Persian Gulf region as part of an upcoming USO/AFE Tour, according to the USO. Last year, Keith traveled to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Germany; Belgium; Iraq and Afghanistan, giving a number of performances, including at remote locations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the organization said.
After learning that some commercial shipping containers full of personal items destined for a US Army National Guard unit in Afghanistan were raided by thieves, Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee has teamed with the nonprofit organization Operation AC to send a shipment of his own to the troops whose loot was stolen.
Lee's care packages include copies of his latest solo album, "Tommyland: The Ride," as well as other CDs, Playstation games, Gameboys, portable DVD players and other items collected and organized by Operation AC, which provides new combat boots and care packages to deployed military members serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"I'm so happy to be able to do something for them," Lee said in a statement. "Music gets us through a lot ... I'd like to tell them to get home safe and keep rockin'."
American Idol champion Fantasia Barrino will star as herself in the upcoming Lifetime Original Movie "Life is Not a Fairy Tale: The Fantasia Barrino Story." The made-for-TV flick is inspired by the true story of Barrino, "a teenage single mother who overcame poverty, sexual abuse and illiteracy by using her incredible voice to rise to national prominence as the winner of American Idol," according to a Lifetime Television press release.
The movie will premiere in August, though a specific air date hasn't been announced.
