Tom Petty's camp fires anti-scalping salvo

Hundreds of tickets to upcoming Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers performances in New York City and St. Paul, MN, were voided after they were discovered for sale on websites that resell tickets at inflated prices.

According to messages Petty's manager, Tony Dimitriades, posted on the artist's website, 460 tickets to Petty's June 26-27 performances in St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center, as well as about 800 tickets to Petty's June 20 show at New York's Madison Square Garden, have been canceled.

The tickets that Petty's management claims were found for sale on ticket-broker sites were purchased during a presale of tickets that were set aside for members of Petty's Highway Companions fan club. It is a violation of the fan club's membership conditions to re-sell those tickets.

"Those tickets have now been canceled along with the associated Highway Companions Club memberships," Dimitriades wrote on the website. "We will make these tickets available to club members who comply with the conditions of club membership and are willing to pick up their tickets at a special fan club Will Call window on the night of the show. In order to accomplish this, a new Internet on-sale of these tickets, open only to fan club members, will be announced shortly."

Petty's camp has also tightened its delivery of fan-club tickets. Beginning with presale tickets sold on May 2, those who purchase presale tickets will be required to pick up their tickets at a fan club Will Call window at each venue. Tickets will be distributed only to fans who show their identification and the credit card they used to purchase the presale tickets.

No identification will be required for presale tickets sold before May 2--including the New York City and St. Paul tickets that weren't canceled, according to Petty's website.

"We don't claim to have completely eliminated all reselling activity on these or any other shows," Dimitriades said in a statement on the site. "But this is definitely a step in the right direction and a major strike on behalf of the good guys."

Petty's camp, along with Ticketmaster, promoters Jam Productions and Live Nation, and Signatures Network (Petty's website administrator) took action after fans on Petty's website message board complained of an abundance of tickets on broker websites that were priced at several times their face value. (Ticketmaster is LiveDaily's parent company.)

Seating charts showing the specific tickets that have been canceled are shown on Petty's site. "If you purchased tickets from an unauthorized source, and those tickets were canceled, your only recourse is through the unauthorized seller," Dimitriades wrote on the site.
