Avenged Sevenfold joins Ozzfest, Ozzy to play second stage

May 19, 2006 02:08 PM
Avenged Sevenfold is the final addition to the main-stage lineup for this year's annual Ozzfest tour, which kicks off at the end of June.

"Ozzfest has so much history," Avenged Sevenfold frontman M. Shadows said in a statement. "We are honored to be sharing the stage with so many great bands and even more excited in being part of the legacy that is Ozzfest."

The Southern California-based quintet, which is backing its gold-certified album "City of Evil," rounds out a main-stage roster that also features System of a Down, Disturbed , Hatebreed and Lacuna Coil, as well as tour founder and namesake Ozzy Osbourne on several dates.

Osbourne, who is scheduled to perform at 10 of Ozzfest's 27 tour stops, announced earlier this month plans to headline the festival's second stage during the tour's July 8 performance in the Los Angeles area.

"After 10 years of headlining Ozzfest's main-stage I think it's time for a change," he said in a statement. "I haven't had a chance to play this close to an audience in years and I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to it. So look out LA.”

Since issuing that announcement, Osbourne has also made plans to headline the second stage when the tour touches down in San Antonio, TX, and East Troy, WI. Details are included below.

The second-stage lineup features Black Label Society--fronted by Osbourne's guitarist, Zakk Wylde--as well as Atreyu, Unearth, Bleeding Through, Norma Jean, A Life Once Lost, Strapping Young Lad, The Red Chord, Full Blown Chaos, Walls of Jericho, All That Remains, and Between the Buried and Me.

Osbourne said he isn't appearing on all of the tour's dates "because after 10 years I feel it's time to let someone else share the headlining spotlight. We want to shake it up a bit this year. I've closed virtually every Ozzfest performance for a decade now, and I feel I can finally let other artists headline our festival and that's my intention for the future."

Ozzy headlined Ozzfest with Black Sabbath in 2004 and 2005. This year's Ozzfest appearances will mark his first solo concerts in three years.
During the tour, he is expected to debut a new song that will appear on a new album that he and Wylde are currently working on.

Meanwhile, Roadrunner Records has set a July 3 release for Black Label Society's new disc, "Shot to Hell."

More Ozzfest information is posted at the tour's official website.
