David Lee Roth nails down tour details
Rocker turned radio-host turned rocker David Lee Roth , who earlier this month announced plans to make his return to the stage this summer, has fleshed out an initial batch of dates for the run.
The jaunt kicks off June 28 at the House of Blues in Chicago, and venues have been confirmed for 15 shows that are scattered through late August. Details are included below, and more dates are expected.
Roth's summer tour comes on the heels of his unceremonious dumping by CBS Radio, which canned the motor-mouthed entertainer after less than four months on the job.
In January, Roth took over the syndicated morning slot that Howard Stern vacated when he jumped to SIRIUS satellite radio. Broadcasting from Stern's old studio at CBS Radio's WXRK-FM in New York City, the former Van Halen frontman was lambasted by critics from the moment he hit the air.
In April, with its ratings taking a nosedive at the six stations airing Roth's show, CBS abruptly cut ties with the singer-turned-DJ, who was displeased with his ouster.
"It's official: today is my last day," Roth told listeners on April 21. "I was booted, tossed and it's going to cost somebody." Roth reportedly had signed a $4 million contract with CBS.
Roth's most recent album of original solo material is 1998's "DLR Band." A covers-heavy collection titled "Diamond Dave"--Roth's nickname--followed in 2003. Concertgoers can expect to hear very few of the singer's solo cuts, however; for years now, his set list has consisted almost entirely of material from the six albums Van Halen released between 1978 and 1984.
Roth recently told Billboard that he sees a reunion with Van Halen "as an inevitability." The singer has made the same claim a number of times over the 10 years that have passed since he briefly returned to the fold to record two new Van Halen songs for a 1996 best-of set.
Though his prediction has taken on a "Boy Who Cried Wolf" quality, Roth's chances seem better than they did two years ago, when Van Halen mounted a reunion tour with its other former singer, Sammy Hagar, who replaced Roth in 1985. Murmurings of a Roth/VH reunion were soon resuscitated after Hagar and guitarist Eddie Van Halen had yet another falling-out by the end of the 2004 tour.
