Sonic Youth makes tour plans with Flaming Lips, Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Veteran art-rockers Sonic Youth have added dates with Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Flaming Lips to their summer tour schedule as the band prepares to set out in support of its upcoming new album, "Rather Ripped."
The new dates add to a schedule that kicks off June 13 in New York, the same day as the release of Sonic Youth's new album.
The group will headline most dates on the tour, supported by Be Your Own Pet and then Awesome Color, before performing opening duties for Pearl Jam at eight California and Nevada shows in July. Former Pavement bassist Mark Ibold will join Sonic Youth during the tour as touring bass player to supplement the group's live sound.
After the band dispenses with its Pearl Jam duties and a slot at the Aug. 5 Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago, the Youth will meet up for back-to back concerts starting Aug. 11 with fellow New Yorkers Yeah Yeah Yeahs at an abandoned public swimming pool in Brooklyn. According to Sonic Youth's website, "the abandoned site has been somewhat cleaned up, and the audience will actually be inside the empty pool."
Following the Brooklyn pool plungle, Sonic Youth will tackle a seven-date run with The Flaming Lips, beginning Aug. 24 in St, Paul, MN.
"Rather Ripped," which was recorded in late 2005 in the band's hometown of New York, is Sonic Youth's first new album since 2004's "Sonic Nurse," and also the first since the departure of Jim O'Rourke from the group. O'Rourke had been a full member of the band since 2002's "Murray Street" CD.
