Les Claypool goes on 'Whale' of a tour

Primus frontman/bassist Les Claypool is backing his recently released solo album, "Of Whales and Woe," with a summer run on the US club circuit, and will also slip one-off shows with Primus and long-dormant side project Oysterhead into the mix.

Already on the road, Claypool is scheduled to work his way through the US until at least late July. The itinerary is included below.

Plans include Friday and Saturday (6/16-17) performances at this year's Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Tennessee, the first of which will feature Claypool, drummer Stewart Copeland (The Police) and guitarist Trey Anastasio (Phish), collectively known as Oysterhead. The trio originally formed in 2000 for what was to be a single performance at that year's New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, but went on to release an album, "The Pecking Order," and mounted a brief 2001 tour behind the set. The upcoming Bonnaroo show will be the group's first live performance in five years.

Best known for his work with Primus, Claypool has also headed up a number of other side projects over the past 15 years, including Sausage, Holy Mackerel, Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains and The Fearless Flying Frog Brigade. "Of Whales and Woe" is the first studio collection he has released under his own name.

As if his musical pursuits weren't keeping him busy enough, Claypool is also branching into other forms of media. Next month, his debut novel, "South of the Pumphouse," will land in stores, and he'll hype the release with a half-dozen book signings, details for which are posted at his website.

He's also making his feature-film debut with the new flick "Electric Apricot: The Quest for Festeroo," which he'll screen at Bonnaroo on Friday afternoon. The film--which Claypool wrote, directed and stars in--is "a mockumentary-style spoof" described as "a comedic character study of four headstrong musicians trying to establish themselves in the jam scene," according to Claypool's website.

Meanwhile, Primus (Claypool, Tim Alexander, and Larry LaLonde) will re-emerge late next month for a July 29 headlining performance at the Hedgpeth Festival in Twin Lakes, WI. The group reportedly plans to release a new album some time this year.
