Paul Oakenfold adds dates to 'Lively' tour
DJ Paul Oakenfold has added several dates to his upcoming tour supporting his new album, "A Lively Mind."
The British-born and Los Angeles-based DJ/producer has supplemented his itinerary with several new West Coast shows, as well as a July 22 tour capper in New York.
Shows in Las Vegas, San Diego, Sacramento, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver have been added to the outing, which kicks off July 7 in Scottsdale, AZ. Details are shown below.
Released June 6, "A Lively Mind" follows the pattern stamped out on Oakenfold's 2002 debut, "Bunkka," with the DJ laying down electronic tracks for a slate of guest vocalists, this time including Pharrell Williams, Grandmaster Flash and actress Brittany Murphy, who makes her recorded debut on the album's first single, "Faster Kill Pussycat." The track is currently No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.
Oakenfold's adopted California home inspired the Williams-voiced track "Sex 'N Money," according to a press release.
"It's a song about how soulless the Hollywood party scene can be," Oakenfold said. "I've been in situations where people are introduced to me and then they spot a celebrity, standing nearby, and they disappear, literally mid-sentence. So the track is really Hollywood in a nutshell for me--it's all sex and money.
"We deconstructed our original track and rewrote it for Pharrell, in a way that's melodic and hypnotic and just keeps coming back at you in waves."
Oakenfold originally rose to prominence as a music producer in the late '80s and early '90s with his partner Steve Osborne, who together produced or remixed works by British bands such as Happy Mondays, New Order and The Cure. The pair was nominated by the BPI--the British equivalent of the Grammy Awards--as Best Producers in 1990.
Oakenfold has also worked extensively with U2, beginning with his remixes of "Even Better Than the Real Thing" and "Mysterious Ways," two cuts from the group's 1991 album, "Achtung Baby." He also served as a DJ on the band's "ZOO TV" tour and, most recently, remixed "Beautiful Day," which hit No. 1 on the American dance charts, according to Oakenfold's website.
