Reggae Sunsplash returns with UB40, Maxi Priest, more
The Reggae Sunsplash festival will return from a seven-year hiatus this summer, touring large outdoor venues with a lineup that includes UB40 , Maxi Priest and Toots & The Maytals.
The tour, which also features Third World , Rik Rok and master of ceremonies Tommy Cowan, kicks off Aug. 10 in West Palm Beach, FL. The 17-city trek will conclude in early September.
The event is a continuation of a festival that last toured arenas in 1999. The original Reggae Sunsplash was born in 1978 when the event's founder, Tommy Johnson, created the multi-day festival in Jamaica. Johnson, who died in 1997, later expanded the event's concept by bringing a smaller, one-day version of the festival on tour throughout the US.
Johnson's family is overseeing the latest version of Reggae Sunsplash with assistance from Toby Ludwig, Johnson's longtime agent.
"We are here to celebrate the great sounds from the Island of Jamaica and honor the memory of my dad's efforts in bringing the music and message to people of all races, creeds and color," Johnson's son, TJ, said in a press release. "Sunsplash has always been about spreading the message of one-love, peace and harmony--and now that will continue."
Aside from the event's musical entertainment, the shows will also feature "Jamaican food and crafts fairs, selling everything from 'jerk' chicken to intricate wood carvings and hand crafted clothes," according to a press release.
A Japanese version of the festival featuring a different lineup of artists is also scheduled for Aug. 19 in Yokohama. Information on that show and a history of the event can be found at the festival's official website.
