Grant-Lee Phillips maps out tour, new album
Singer/songwriter Grant-Lee Phillips will mount a short tour this summer following the June 27 release of his latest studio album, "ninteeneighties."
Phillips and his backing band--David Carpenter on upright bass and Kevin Jarvis on drums--will preview the tour with a June 29 one-off date in Los Angeles. The trio will then take a month off before kicking off the outing in earnest July 25 in Seattle.
The 13-city tour will follow a fairly straightforward path across the country before winding up with a mid-August East Coast stretch. The full itinerary is detailed below.
The followup to 2004's "Virginia Creeper," Phillips' new disc looks back to the singer's formative years in the music industry. "nineteeneighties" is a collection of the performer's favorite cover songs, or what Phillips called his "personal mixtape" in a press release.
"A lot of us, who were fans, found real purpose in the search for new music during the early eighties, the discovery of something that wasn't readily being delivered over the airwaves," Phillips said. "Music that wasn't yanked off a rack and, for the most part, wasn't advertised, this was a treasure. The tangible upsurge of underground and alternative artists releasing great albums on small labels is what really captivated me.
"The more I got inside of these songs, with not much more than a guitar or a piano, their personality came through on new levels and my appreciation for them deepened."
Founded and fronted by Phillips, Grant Lee Buffalo released its debut album, "Fuzzy," in 1993, and spawned three subsequent albums before calling it quits. The group's folksy brand of rock music was critically acclaimed, with Rolling Stone dubbing Phillips the Best Male Vocalist of 1995.
Though the group achieved moderate success in Europe, Grant Lee Buffalo failed to garner a widespread commercial audience in America.
