Matisyahu gets busy on the road
The world's best-known--and possibly only--Hasidic reggae star sets out next month on a late summer tour that backs his sophomore studio effort, "Youth."
Matisyahu 's schedule begins with an Aug. 6 performance at the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, and a pair of West Coast shows with Michael Franti & Spearhead follow before he takes some time off and works in an Aug. 23 UK performance at the Birmingham Academy. A new stretch of US shows kicks off in early Septmeber, and a dozen dates are confirmed for that month.
The Polyphonic Spree and Gomez will take turns on Matisyahu 's September bill, and he'll share the stage with The Flaming Lips during a mid-month stop in Texas. While in the Lonestar State, he'll also turn up at the Austin City Limits Festival. His itinerary as of press time appears below.
Backing Matisyahu on stage are drummer Jonah David, guitarist Aaron Dugan and bassist Josh Werner.
Released in March, "Youth" is Matisyahu's follow-up to 2004's "Shake Off the Dust ... Arise." Between the two studio sets, he rose to fame thanks largely to the success of last year's "Live at Stubb's," a concert CD that documents his March 11, 2005 visit to the Austin, TX, venue. The disc's live version of the "Shake Off the Dust ... Arise" track "King Without a Crown," was an alt-rock hit, prompting Matisyahu to record a new studio rendition for "Youth."
"King Without a Crown," the title track from "Youth" and three other cuts are streaming at Matisyahu's website.
