The Hold Steady tackles 'America' on fall tour

Brooklyn indie rockers The Hold Steady have lined up a fall tour supporting their third album, "Boys and Girls in America," due Oct. 3 on Vagrant Records.

The band is currently in the midst of a stretch of dates focused on Northeastern locales and will next hit Toronto on Monday (7/31).

The fall tour, which kicks off Sept. 30 in Hamden, CT, and will include three dates each in California and Texas, is centered around the release of the band's third album, which follows up on last year's "Separation Sunday," and marks the group's first release for Vagrant, which snatched up the band after it decided to leave Brooklyn's Frenchkiss label.

"Boys and Girls in America" was recorded in May and produced by John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.). The album's title was taken from a line in Jack Kerouac's beat classic "On the Road," according to lead singer Craig Finn.

"The line goes, 'Boys and girls in America have such a sad time together,'" Finn recently told Billboard.com.

"Basically the songs are about guys and girls, and love. It's not a concept-type record like the last one. It's more of a theme record."
