Tom Waits drops 3-CD set in November
Tom Waits , who recently wrapped up a nine-date tour that included his first club show in three decades, will issue a new, three-disc set dubbed "Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards" on Nov. 21.
The three-hour-plus collection will feature 54 songs, among them 30 new recordings. Rounding out the package will be a 94-page booklet. It will mark Waits' first new release since 2004's "Real Gone."
"Orphans are rough and tender tunes," Waits said in a press release. "Rhumbas about mermaids, shuffles about trainwrecks, tarantellas about insects, madrigrals about drowning. Scared, mean, orphaned songs of rapture and melancholy. Songs that grew up hard. Songs of dubious origin rescued from cruel fate and now left wanting only to be cared for. Show that you are not afraid and take them home. They don't bite, they just need attention."
Among the songs making their first appearances on a Waits album are tracks originally recorded for films, the theater and other projects. The album also includes Waits' renditions of songs by The Ramones, Daniel Johnston, Kurt Weill & Bertolt Brecht, and Leadbelly, among others.
Each CD is separately sub-titled. The "Brawlers" set "is chock full of raucous blues and full throated juke joint stomp"; "Bawlers" "contains Celtic and country ballads, waltzes, lullabies, piano and classic lyrical Waits' songs"; and "Bastards" "is filled with experimental music and strange tales," according to a press release issued by Anti Records.
Waits produced the album with his wife and longtime collaborator, Kathleen Brennan.
So far, no tour plans have been announced in conjunction with the album.
