Album Review: Gin Blossoms, "Major Lodge Victory" (Hybrid Recordings)

After a 10-year recording drought, Arizona's Gin Blossoms emerge victorious with a collection of harmony-driven, willowy, jangle-rock songs.

For the 12-song "Major Lodge Victory," the Gin Blossoms stick with the pop-rock formula that allowed them to score hits like "Hey Jealousy" and "Found Out About You" in the 1990s. The new album chock full of potential hits (with nary a poor song), all peppered with strong melodic riffs and hooks.

"Major Lodge Victory" kicks off with "Learning the Hard Way," a fine display of the Gin Blossoms' lush harmonies. A drum beat segues into "Come On Hard," during which lead singer and Michigan native Robin Wilson drops his trademark "hey" just before the bridge.

"Heart Shaped Locket" could be one of the strongest songs in the Gin Blossoms' catalog. Its classic pop melody, sweet harmonies and memorable chorus add up to an obvious single. "Long Time Gone" is a musical sister to one of the Gin Blossoms' biggest hits, "Hey Jealousy," and the album closes with a pouty ode to a lost love and one of the best songs on the album, "California Sun."

For the last 10 years, the Gin Blossoms have been an on-and-off group with a line-up that resembled a revolving door. Now that most of the longtime members have returned, let’s hope they don’t go another 10 years between albums.
