Paul Simon mounts another 'Surprise' tour
Legendary singer/songwriter Paul Simon , who last month wrapped up a round of US concert dates, will tackle another stint of shows this fall as he continues to support his first new album in six years, "Surprise."
Simon's fall schedule begins with a two-night stand in Vancouver, British Columbia, after which the outing is confirmed to hit nine US cities by mid-October. Details are included below.
Before heading out on his fall tour, Simon will also play a pair of one-off shows, the first of which is an Aug. 26 benefit concert in Dallas. Proceeds from that show--which will also feature a performance from Edie Brickell and New Bohemians--will help defray medical costs incurred by Dallas-area actor Robert C. Meadows, who suffered severe brain trauma after an alleged random attack outside of a convenient store last fall. The families of Brickell, who is Simon's wife, and Meadows have been friends since Brickell and Meadows were children, according to the Robert C. Meadows Fund website. Additional information about the Aug. 26 benefit is posted at the site.
In May, Simon offered up "Surprise," an 11-song album he co-produced with Brian Eno (Roxy Music, David Bowie). Simon and Eno also co-wrote three of the new songs. Guests who appear on the set include Steve Gadd, Herbie Hancock and Bill Frisell.
Simon recorded the disc at Eno's studio in London, as well as at studios in New York and Nashville. The set includes the Oscar-nominated track "Father and Daughter," which first turned up on the 2002 soundtrack for the film "The Wild Thornberrys." The full track listing is posted at Simon's website.
Earlier this week, Rhino Records issued "From the Big Apple to The Big Easy," a concert-DVD that captures a September 2005 Hurricane Katrina benefit concert that took place at New York City's Madison Square Garden. Simon is among the acts featured on the disc; he and Art Garfunkel perform "Mrs. Robinson and "Homeward Bound" together before teaming with Aaron Neville for "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Simon also performs with Jimmy Buffet on "Sea Cruise" as part of Buffet's set.
All of the proceeds from the DVD will benefit a number of charities involved in hurricane relief, including the Simon-founded Children's Health Fund, additional information about which is available at Simon's website.
