Album Review: Ray LaMontagne, “Till the Sun Turns Black” (RCA)
Let it be said that Ray LaMontagne's "Trouble" was arguably one of the best albums of 2004. Seemingly arriving fully formed on his auspicious debut, LaMontagne channeled the style, charisma and talent of the best singer-songwriters of the past few decades, most notably Van Morrison.
"Till the Sun Turns Black" finds LaMontagne and veteran producer Ethan Johns expanding his sound from bare-boned acoustics to a more fleshed-out production while sacrificing none of the debut's warmth and immediacy.
Building on the introspective lyrics and feel of "Trouble," "Till the Sun Turns Black" adds new texture and atmosphere, opening up the album to a broader range of styles. The songs within weave and interact as if in conversation with one another. If a fan of literate folk-rock, this very well might be the perfect soundtrack to your fall.
