Keane cancels postponed shows

Keane , which last month announced it was postponing its fall tour of North America so that frontman Tom Chaplin could undergo treatment for drug and alcohol addiction, has now canceled the run outright.

"Obviously it's crucial that Tom is given the time to get better properly," pianist Tim Rice-Oxley said in a message posted today (9/8) at Keane's website. "With the first dates in America only a fortnight away, his doctors feel there is undue pressure on Tom to rush through rehab and get back out on the road. That's why, between the three of us, we've decided to cancel the North American tour.

The move results in 15 North American concerts being scrapped. Details are shown below.

Last month, Chaplin told fans via a message posted at the band's site that he had "been having to deal with an increasing problem with drink and drugs, and the time has come to get the professional help I need to sort myself out.

"I feel desperately disappointed to be letting down our fans," he continued, "but I want to get myself right now so that I can be back on the road for the rest of the year."

Keane has left intact its plans for a European outing that kicks off in mid-October. Details about that run are available at the band's website.

"Under the Iron Sea," Keane's sophomore album, surfaced in June. The new disc--which follows the group's 2004 debut, "Hopes and Fears"--entered The Billboard 200 chart at No. 4.

Earlier this week, Keane was crowned Band of the Year at the annual GQ Men of the Year awards, which took place at the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden. Rice-Oxley and drummer Richard Hughes were on hand to accept the trophy, which was presented by actress/singer Juliette Lewis.
