GWAR suits up for fall tour
Costumed gore-rockers GWAR will get their Halloween started early with the mid-October launch of a massive fall tour that supports the group's latest album, "Beyond Hell."
An Oct. 13 kick-off in Philadelphia is planned, and the band has about 50 dates lined up through early December. Details are included below.
Last month, GWAR offered up "Beyond Hell," the follow-up to 2004's "War Party." The new set, which the group recorded with producer Devin Townsend, includes a cover version of Alice Cooper's "School's Out."
"The concept of the album is the closest thing to a rock opera that GWAR has done since 'Ragnarok,' and concerns GWAR’s epic journey into the tunnels and caverns that honeycomb your world, a journey not only to escape their earthly prison 'from within,' but also to find and confront this so-called 'Satan,' who seems to think that he is a bigger bad ass than Oderus," the group wrote in a message posted at its website. "Along the way GWAR encounters a bevy of demonic dickheads and hapless victims, all ready to die for your entertainment."
GWAR is a satirical thrash-metal/punk band formed in the mid-'80s by a group of artists and musicians at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. The band has made a name for itself via its horror-film-inspired costumes, raunchy lyrics, and graphic, gory stage performances.
Earlier this year, toy manufacturer Shocker Toys obtained the rights to manufacture a line of GWAR action figures modeled after the band members: Oderus Urungus, Flattus Maximus, Beefcake the Mighty, Jizmak Da Gusha and Balsac the Jaws of Death.
