Briefly: Bob Dylan, Slipknot, Sarah Brightman, Jewel

An old reel-to-reel tape featuring some early songs by Bob Zimmerman--who later became known as Bob Dylan --and hometown friend Ric Kangas will be auctioned in October by Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas.

According to the auction house's online description, the tape was recorded in May 1959 in Hibbing, MN, and features four original songs.

"Bob played and sang 'I Got Trouble' and 'I Got a New Girl,' and backed up Kangas on his song, 'I Wish I Knew,'" the description reads. "Those two Dylan songs, among the earliest Dylan originals known, were used in the Martin Scorsese documentary 'No Direction Home' in 2005. The songs are rough, but one song, which was not used in the film, really hints at what was to come. It's called 'The Frog Song,' and features Dylan singing in a low, guttural voice, like one of his heroes, Clarence 'Frogman' Henry (who used that 'croaking' vocal style on the 1956 novelty hit, 'Ain't Got No Home'). This is where Bob first uses the idea of singing in a different voice, and it lead to the Woody Guthrie-influenced style made so famous on scores of Dylan classics."

Shawn Crahan, better known as Clown, that gives the Slipknot fan a window into the world of the band as seen through the mind of its creator," according to a press release.

Disc 2 features a mix of live footage, music videos and interviews with each member of the band.

The selections on both collections span from Brightman's 1986 "Phantom of the Opera" collaborations with Andrew Lloyd Webber to her latest release, 2001's "Classics."

Pop singer Jewel has been tapped to host the fifth season of the USA Network talent completion "Nashville Star," which debuts Jan. 11. Cowboy Troy will return as co-host.

"I grew up on a ranch in Alaska, and my favorite memories are of sitting around a camp fire with my father and listening to the songs he wrote and sang," Jewel said in a press release. "It was pure country music, and it has made me a sincere fan of country music ever since. I am so excited to be part of this show, and for the chance to watch the contestants compete in this uniquely American art form."

Wynonna Judd and Cowboy Troy hosted the program's previous season.
