Album Review: Jet, "Shine On" (Atlantic)

The success of Jet 's debut album, "Get Born," came out of nowhere and must have been a shock. But the Australian foursome, which sounded like a post-punk AC/DC, had the swagger, screams and songs to back it up--not to mention the leather jackets.

The group's follow-up, "Shine On," is not quite as infectious or spontaneous as its predecessor, but die-hard fans will probably get what they need.

Once again, the group toggles between big ballads and badass rockers. "Shine On" has an answer to "Are You Gonna Be My Girl," and its name is "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is," a sassy, two-and-a-half minute track decked out in cowbell and shuffling drums. That song and the album's other hard rock numbers, notably "Stand Up" and "Rip It Up," sound like outtakes from Jet's first album. Same for the better ballads here, the marching "Shiny Magazine," and the plaintive piano dirge "Shine On," the best of the group.

Essentially, though, "Shine On" sounds like "Get Born: The Sequel," and, as such, fails to live up to the debut's standards. The rockers here aren't as good as those on the first album and the ballads even less so.

Next time, Jet should spend less time sounding like Jet and more time copping AC/DC. That's a winning formula that works for the foursome. Too bad "Shine On" just doesn't.
