30 Seconds To Mars, The Used to top Taste of Chaos

Actor Jared Leto's band 30 Seconds to Mars and fellow alt-rockers The Used are slated to co-headline next year's Taste of Chaos tour, according to Leto and his brother/drummer Shannon.

Taste of Chaos is the winter spin-off of the summer Warped Tour, both of which were masterminded by tour producer Kevin Lyman. Dates have yet to be announced, but Taste of Chaos is expected to kick off in February. Jared Leto made the announcement last month during KEDJ-FM's Edgefest in Tempe, AZ, and Shannon Leto confirmed it during a subsequent phone interview.

"[Kevin Lyman's] proactive in that whole eco-friendly living, and that's what gravitated me toward him," Shannon Leto said. "The Warped Tour was really well thought out and accommodating to us. He's a great guy. For the Taste of Chaos, the bus and all the trucks are going to be fueled by vegetable oil. We're going to have recycled papers--all the fliers and the little doo-dads are going to be biodegradable. It's going to be really exciting."

30 Seconds to Mars is riding a wave of success with the single "The Kill," from the album "A Beautiful Lie." The song's video won the MTV2 Video Music Award this summer.

On 30 Seconds to Mars' eponymous debut album, actor/musician/artist Jared Leto admits he settled for metaphors and double entendres to hide the true meaning of his songs. But that changed with the follow-up.

"I did want to be much more direct--I wanted it to be much more of a confessional landscape," said Leto, whose acting credits include "Alexander," "Panic Room," "Requiem for a Dream" and TV's "My So-Called Life."

"[The debut 30 Seconds to Mars album was] filled with metaphors and, as successful as the first album was, it was still very, very personal to me," Leto added. "Once you uncovered what was underneath, it was entirely personal. This album is much more emotionally transparent. I think it's exciting to put as much of yourself [as you can] into your art. That's what makes it the truest it can be."

Leto explained it is a feat to spill his guts in front of a venue full of fans, who may or may not understand the full meaning of the songs. He knows the songs are personal, but do the fans?

"It's a challenge, but I think it's inevitable and it's important," he said. "I think that people make their own interpretation of a song even if it's 'Happy Birthday.'"

"When we're up there, we're pouring out our hearts and souls," Shannon Leto said of the group's live performances. "Every night is a different experience for me. People can tell that it's real and there's a passion up there. It's not a hobby. [Jared is] an artist, once you get down to it. He draws. He works on graphics. He does all the artwork for the band. He writes the music. He's an artist. That's the bottom line. It's really a shame that that people have to put him in a corner and say, '‘Oh, you do that so how can you do this?'

"There's a lot of haters in the world. And everybody falls into it. Everybody. There's this little thing in there saying, 'How can this person do this?' It's a shame, but we've proven ourselves. We've toured and toured and toured. We played in front of anybody with anybody for years and years and years, letting the music just speak for itself. We persevered. We won over a lot of people."

30 Seconds to Mars--whose lineup also feature bassist Matt Wachter and guitarist Tomo Milcevic--is kicking off the latest MTV2 $2 Bill Concert Series Oct. 17 with Cobra Starship, Head Automatica and Men Women and Children.
