Album Review: Barry Manilow, "The Greatest Songs of the Sixties" (Arista)

There may not be a vocalist in music as easily identifiable as Barry Manilow . While "The Greatest Songs of the Sixties" doesn't do much to broaden his silky smooth and sugary sweet parameters, it does further engrave an already iconic personality even deeper into the American musical landscape.

The logical follow-up to "The Greatest Songs of the Fifties," "Sixties" features Manilow crooning some of the next decade's standards. But while most might associate the '60s with a psychedelic swagger, Manilow stays close to home on this collection of 13 safe and saccharin sing-alongs. Three of the songs are penned by Burt Bacharach--"Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head," "This Guy's In Love With You" and "What the World Needs Now is Love"--which makes for an easy translation, but not much of a stretch (imagine the adult-contemporary equivalent of Bon Jovi covering Poison).

Manilow doesn't make us forget Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love," but he shares a kindred Vegas spirit with The King that resonates throughout. Most memorable are Herman's Hermits' "There's a Kind of Hush," The Beatles' "And I Love Her" and The Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin'," all of which are carried by lush orchestrations and Manilow's soothing tone, soaring melodies and perfect pitch.

While the package may not prove as compelling as Johnny Cash covering Nine Inch Nails, consider it another notch in Manilow's bedpost of manicured musical tapestries that will translate magically to his live stage. And isn't that the point?
