Brooks & Dunn rack up three CMA Awards

Country duo Brooks & Dunn dominated the award podium at Monday night's (11/6) 40th annual CMA awards ceremony, scoring three awards together, with Ronnie Dunn picking up an additional trophy on his own.

The pair brought home awards for Vocal Duo of the Year, as well as Single of the Year and Music Video of the Year for "Believe," a songwriting credit which also earned Dunn an additional statuette for Song of the Year.

Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley also brought home multiple trophies at the ceremony, with "American Idol" winner Underwood scoring Female Vocalist of the Year honors as well as the Horizon Award, given to the performer who demonstrates "the most significant creative growth and development in Country Music." Underwood's double win was the first of its kind since Alison Krauss took home both awards in 1995.

Paisley's "Time Well Wasted" was honored as Album of the Year, while his duet with Dolly Parton, "When I Get Where I'm Going," merited him Musical Event of the Year laurels.

"The album really encompasses a lot of people," Paisley said at a backstage press conference. "The producers, the fans, co-writers and even family get involved in the album process. And I like that. It's an art form and it should feel like a journey."

With their three wins at this year's event, Brooks & Dunn moved into a tie with Vince Gill for most CMA wins, with 18 trophies over the years.

"It's really good to win," Kix Brooks said backstage. "We are prepared every year to clap for someone else. We are surprised that voters aren't tired of seeing us win every year."

Dunn shared his Song of the Year award with Craig Wiseman, who also took home the same award in 2004. "It's an amazing song and I am blown away by it," Wiseman said after praising his co-writer. "Every time I hear it it's like I hear it for the first time."

Other winners included Kenny Chesney , who took the award for Entertainer of the Year, and Keith Urban, who won for Male Vocalist of the Year.

"To see those people come hear the songs I sing--it's bigger than anything I have ever dreamed," said Chesney, who performed his current single "You Save Me" from his latest album, "The Road and the Radio."

Rascal Flatts earned their fourth consecutive nod as Vocal Group of the Year, and also performed "My Wish" from their CMA-nominated album, "Me and My Gang."

Guitarist Randy Scruggs won his third Musician of the Year award, following wins in 1999 and 2004.

Country Music Hall of Famer Kris Kristofferson welcomed three new members--George Strait, Harold Bradley and Sonny James
--into the Hall's ranks during the ceremony.

"Who'd of thunk it," Strait said as he accepted his induction plaque. "To my fans: don't think I don't realize why I am up here."

The live broadcast marked the event's first year on its new network home, ABC-TV, which aired the ceremony live. The network sent along several of its top stars to help host the event, including Eva Longoria of "Desperate Housewives" and James Denton and Kimberly Williams-Paisley of "According to Jim."
