Rod Stewart announces North American tour

Rod Stewart , revitalized as a rock-and-roller after the commercial success of his recent album of classic-rock covers, will hit the road in 2007 for a 56-city North American trek.

Stewart's "Still the Same ... Great Rock Classics of Our Time" netted the Scottish-born rocker the fourth No. 1 album of his long career last month, when the disc burst out of the gate following its release, amassing 184,000 copies sold during its first week on shelves in the US.

The singer will kick off his 2007 tour Jan. 12 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The 56-city outing--which will cover most geographical regions of the country and include several excursions into Canada along the way--will span four months and culminate in early May.

According to promoters, the tour will feature a rotating circular center stage "designed to deliver fans unfettered viewing of the concert." Stewart will be accompanied onstage by a nine-piece band and three back-up singers.

Stewart's return to rock-and-roll follows his celebrated four-part "Great American Songbook" series of albums, a cycle inaugurated in 2002 with "It Had to Be You," and completed with last year's fourth volume, "Thanks For the Memory." All four discs easily achieved platinum status.

"Still the Same," which hit stores Oct. 10, features covers of rock standards originally performed by Bob Dylan ("If Not For You"), Van Morrison ("Crazy Love"), and Bob Seger (the title song), among others.
