Danzig's 'Blackest' tour stays close to home
Fans who'd like to cacth Glenn Danzig 's "Blackest of the Black" tour this year will have to come to him; he's sticking to West Coast stages because he prefers to only tour within driving or short flying distance of his California home.
"I want to do shows where I feel like I won't be wasting my whole day away," Danzig said. "You're on stage for only two hours a night. The rest of the day, I'm stuck in a hotel or a bus or something. This way, it's only two weeks. Pretty much, if I can't fly home in an hour or two, I can drive home. I think it will be much easier for me to do.
"Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to do any shows in the Midwest or on the East Coast until I can figure out a way to do that in a way that I don't hate it. Now, I feel like I'm wasting my day away waiting for the show. It's great being on stage, but it's the other 20 hours of the day where you're just sitting around doing nothing and you're not at home."
Danzig, who kicks off the tour Nov. 17 in Seattle, will be joined on stage by former Samhain bandmate Steve Zing on bass, as well as Type O Negative's Johnny Kelly on drums and Kenny Hickey on guitar. The openers are Lacuna Coil, The Haunted, Belphegor and Asesino.
"I always do a good selection from all the records," Danzig said of his planned setlists. "We'll do stuff from 'Circles of Snakes,' also. I know because Steve is playing with me from Samhain, we're going to do a couple Samhain songs."
This is the third year of Danzig's "Blackest of the Black" tour. The festival was organized by Danzig and debuted in the summer of 2003 with Danzig, Superjoint Ritual, Opeth, Nile, Lacuna Coil and Behemoth on the bill. The 2005 edition featured Danzig, Chimaira, Behemoth, Himsa, Mortiis and The Agony Scene.
Last month, Danzig released "Black Aria II," the follow up to 1993's "Black Aria," which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Classical chart. Produced, written and--with a couple of exceptions--performed by Glenn, "Black Aria II" tells the story of a rebel of ancient lore--Lilith, Adam's wife before Eve.
"I had a story inside that I wanted to tell, and it had to come out," Danzig said of "Black Aria II." "It was a lot of fun. I enjoy stuff like that. I just sit there and let the song take me where it's taking me. Sometimes, you start out with the song a certain way and, once you lay down certain tracks, all of a sudden you start hearing other stuff. It's pretty cool."
Though the intricate songs of "Black Aria II" will not be played live on the "Blackest of the Black" tour, there is talk of a Vegas performance, he said.
"They're talking about doing it as some kind of Vegas show, some kind of Sarah Brightman or Cirque du Soleil thing or something," he said. "We'll see if that happens. They came to me first and said, 'Would you be opposed to this?' I thought about it for awhile and I said, 'That might actually be kind of cool.' They want to do this ['Black Aria' album] and the first one together. I told them, 'When there's something ready to show me on paper, bring it to me and let me look at it.' I'm not opposed to the idea."
Danzig has also released "3 Faces of Danzig," a limited-edition, fully articulated toy figure series that highlights different eras of Glenn's career: "Misfits-version" Danzig, which wears his classic skull-and-crossbones black T-shirt from the Misfits' "Walk Among Us" album cover; "Samhain-version" Danzig, covered in dripping blood ala the "Initium" LP cover; and "Danzig-version" Danzig, which is shirtless and comes complete with the trademark Danzig belt buckle and upside-down-cross medallion necklace as on the "Lucifuge" album. The figures are made of soft vinyl, stand 10-inches tall, retail for $75 each, and are available in stores such as Spencer Gifts, Hot Topic and comic book/specialty stores.
In early 2007, Danzig will release "The Lost Tracks of Danzig," a two-CD set that is comprised of two-dozen-plus previously unreleased tracks spanning the band's entire career, and recorded during the seven-album arc that began with 1988's Danzig.
"There was a lot of stuff to review," Danzig said. "It was a big project. I'm glad I don't have to do anything like that again. What was really weird was I had to get the tapes baked because they were so old. They were on old tapes and the information was sliding all over and the tapes were crackling. So we actually had to put them in the oven. There's a company that does it. It bakes the tape, the filament or whatever it is, onto the tape so you can transfer it to another tape or to a hard drive. That's what we had to do. We had to have 30 tapes baked."
