Prince to rock Super Bowl XLI halftime show

Prince will enliven a halftime audience at next year's Super Bowl XLI in Miami, the National Football League announced this week.

The Super Bowl, annually viewed by as many as one billion people around the world, according to the league, was rocked by singer Janet Jackson's "costume malfunction" during her 2004 performance with Justin Timberlake. The slip earned broadcaster CBS a rebuke from the FCC and thousands of complaints from viewers.

Soft-drink giant Pepsi will sponsor the halftime show for the first time during this year's game, which is set for Feb. 4. Prince, who was well known early in his career for skirting the edge of good taste, can expect a huge audience for his performance; the NFL claims that more than 141 million viewers watched last year's game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks.

Prince recently became the latest big-name musical act to sign an artist-in-residence deal with a Las Vegas resort. The singer began tackling Friday-night and Saturday-night performances at 3121 Nightclub inside the Rio Hotel & Casino. The club takes its name from the title of Prince's latest album.

The Purple One has been off the road this year, but unveiled new music Oct. 31 on the "Happy Feet" soundtrack, to which he contributed a cut titled "Song of the Heart."

Prince released the "3121" album earlier this year, scoring a career-first No. 1 debut.
