Many frills adorn Christina Aguilera's 'Basics' tour
Christina Aguilera says her latest evolution is the result of love. In between her "coming out" album, "Stripped," and her latest, standards-inspired double CD, "Back to Basics," Aguilera fell in love with music executive Jordan Bratman, and renewed her penchant for the classics.
"I really felt it was time next to dive into that world and get to know it better," Aguilera said during a Tuesday teleconference. "Also during that time--there was a three- or four-year period between 'Stripped' and 'Back to Basics'--I did fall in love, and I had been in a relationship with my now-husband. Discovering a new side of myself took me to this feel-good place. To me, there's nothing that feels better than old music of the '20s, '30s and '40s and on."
Aguilera, who is scheduled to perform on the Grammys this Sunday (2/11), will share that feeling during a two-and-a-half-month tour that kicks off Feb. 20. The jaunt will feature three stage scenes, illuminated by more than 600 moving lights, and a state-of-the-art hydraulic system. A video montage of fan testimonials that have been submitted to Aguilera's' fan club, BabyJaneFanClub.com, also will be featured.
"It's the most fun I've ever had with a show of my own on stage," Aguilera said. "I'm just so excited every night to get out there in front of my audience and bring my album to life.
"As my fans know, I'm so into my visuals and making sure that the image that goes along with my music definitely tells a story and lets my audience's imagination run wild. It takes them out of their element, whatever their day may have consisted of. This is definitely a moment to just relax and enjoy a real show with all elements involved."
Those elements will also include scenes celebrating big-bands and juke-joints, as well as a circus theme, echoing the sentiment found on the Linda Perry-produced "Back to Basics."
"We do start out with sort of a jazz/big band-era kind of feel, but [we're] trying to make it as big as possible," Aguilera said. "My band gets involved in some of the choreography. It's amazing that everyone gets involved. We're all such teammates with each other when we're on that stage. We all have so much fun together. Then we go into a juke-joint feel where we kind of slash that with going to church. With the song 'Makes Me Wanna Pray,' it kind of opens the doors to go to that real soulful, let's-go-to-church kind of place. Then we open it up to a circus element.
"There's quite a journey that goes on on the stage for my audience and us as performers. But it all does have a tie together. So it all makes sense. You just have to see the show."
Even though she is promoting a double record, Aguilera will dive into some of her older material on tour. The songs have been revamped, however.
"It's great that, every time I go out on tour, I do come out with a different feel, look and vibe and a different place than I was before musically. It's really fun for me to get together with my band and reinvent some of the old material in a new and inventive way," Aguilera said.
"I think my audience really enjoys it. I really enjoy it. We are doing 'What a Girl Wants.' It is really fun because we put sort of an old school reggae twist to it. The audience gets to enjoy these songs in a new light. There are other songs as well. It is important for me to reinvent them, give them a whole fresh sound and something new for everybody to enjoy."
