Shows added as initial Police tickets sell out
It looks like The Police reunion tour is a big hit with fans: All eight markets that have gone on sale so far have sold out, according to organizers.
The August 1 and 3 gigs at New York City's Madison Square Garden sold out this morning (2/20) in 14 minutes. Back-to-back shows July 28-29 at Boston's Fenway Park also sold out when they went on sale today. Last weekend saw immediate sellouts in Toronto, Ontario; Montreal, Quebec; and Vancouver, British Columbia, prompting organizers to add second shows in those cities, according to a press release issued by promoter Live Nation.
Another New York-area gig has also been added--August 5 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ--as have June shows in Los Angeles and Oakland, CA. An updated North American itinerary is listed below.
In the coming weeks, more shows are expected to be added in Chicago; Columbus, OH; Detroit; Edmonton, Alberta; Hartford, CT; Houston; Miami; Philadelphia; Tampa, FL; the Minneapolis/St. Paul region; and the Washington/Baltimore area.
Rock trio Fiction Plane, which is scheduled to release its sophomore album in May, will open the tour's North American leg. The group is fronted by Joe Sumner, son of Police singer/bassist Sting.
Following their initial trek, The Police will jet to Europe and then return to North America for another round of dates before heading off to Mexico, South America, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
More information about the outing, tickets and fan-club membership can be found at The Police tour website.
Now that The Police have rehearsed, made their reunion official at the Grammys and announced the tour, all the rockers have to do is get along. Apparently, they are already showing traces of the tension that made The Police one of the world's biggest rock bands and eventually led to their demise.
Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers recently discussed their relationship for a story by New York Times reporter Jon Pareles, who observed the headstrong musicians playfully nitpicking during rehearsals.
"We didn't go to school together," Sting told Pareles. "We didn't grow up in the same neighborhood. We were never a tribe. There was friction for the right reasons. We care passionately about the music and we're all strong characters, and nobody would be pushed around. So it was part of our dynamic. We fought cat and dog over everything."
Of course, new tensions arise in the fact that each bandmate has gotten used to being his own bandleader and composer.
Pareles observed as Sting tried to lead the reunited band by telling the others what to play and picking songs to work on, but then turning to preface his ideas with "I think," "Perhaps," and "Do you think we might."
But apparently, battles have been reduced to banter as The Police know they have to get along for at least a year to come.
"I used to think that strife and struggle and tension were important in a band," Copeland told Pareles. "I no longer believe that. And, in fact, this band has been rescued by our refusal to fall into strife and confrontation."
