Guster launches second Campus Consciousness Tour
Alt-rock band Guster once again is teaming with environmental action group Reverb for the second annual Campus Consciousness Tour, which aims to spread environmental awareness and inspire students to get involved with Earth-friendly causes.
The spring outing, which features pop-rock band The Format in the opening slot, will hit college venues and theaters from the East to the Midwest beginning March 28 in Winston-Salem, NC. So far, dates are booked through late April, but more shows are being added, according to a press release. Updates to the schedule will be posted at Guster's website. Confirmed gigs are listed below.
Reverb is a non-profit organization founded by Guster guitarist/vocalist Adam Gardner and his wife, Lauren Sullivan, to educate, inspire and activate music fans and the music industry at large, according to a press release.
"The feedback and results from last year's tour have been incredibly encouraging," Gardner said in a statement. "Students truly want to be a part of the solution. We hope to empower these students with the information they need to take action, while supporting the on-campus groups that already are involved."
Each stop of the tour will feature an interactive eco-village--called the "Shift Consciousness Pavilion"--where concertgoers can learn about environmental innovation, donate food to a local food bank, and purchase "Big Green Friend" carbon-offset stickers, among other things.
The tour will also feature daytime events at college campuses, including a "Town Hall Forum" organized by the Campus Climate Challenge and the Sustainable Endowments Institute, and a "Pimp My Clean Ride" demonstration, according to a press release.
Reverb will "green up" the outing by powering buses with biodiesel fuel and purchasing renewable energy credits through Native Energy. More than 2,100 tons of carbon dioxide have been neutralized through Guster's offset program, a statement said.
"Each time we launch a tour, we try to find new ways to make it more green," Gardner said. "This tour will include various efforts, from requesting eco-friendly products backstage to using rechargeable batteries for instruments on stage. The band is also offering eco-friendly merchandise including the band's first carbon-neutral release, the 'Satellite EP,' printed on FSC-certified paper with soy inks."
Reverb also has recently worked with Dave Matthews Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alanis Morissette, Jack Johnson, Avril Lavigne, Barenaked Ladies, Bonnie Raitt, O.A.R., Ray LaMontagne and many others.
Boston-bred Guster released its latest album, "Ganging Up on the Sun," last June. A few songs from the set are streaming at the band's MySpace page.
In addition to the Campus Consciousness dates, Guster has a few other shows on the books, including the June 22 Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Colorado.
