Briefly: Linkin Park, Megadeth, Menudo, 'Dreamgirls'
Linkin Park has rolled out the details for its forthcoming third studio album, which bears the title "Minutes to Midnight."
Co-produced by frontman Mike Shinoda and recent Producer of the Year Grammy-winner Rick Rubin, the set is due in stores May 15. Paving the way for the collection will be the album's leadoff single, "What I've Done," which is scheduled for an April 2 release date, according to a press release.
"We wrote in new ways, and used instruments and equipment we hadn't experimented with before, from vintage guitars and amps to mellotron to Rick [Rubin]'s original 808 drum machine he used [while producing] the Beastie Boys' first record," Shinoda said in a prepared statement. "We tried to question every step in our songwriting process."
"They really are reinventing themselves, it doesn't sound like rap-rock," Rubin added. "There's very strong songwriting. It's very melodic ... a progressive record."
The group expects to unveil next month its plans for a summer tour.
"United Abominations," the 11th studio album from heavy-metal vets Megadeth , will hit shelves May 15, according to a press release, and is the band's inaugural set for its new label, Roadrunner Records.
Band founder and sole original member Dave Mustaine recorded the set in Los Angeles and England, along with guitarist Glen Drover, drummer Shawn Drover and bassist James Lomenzo.
"Metal needs a really good old-school record again," Mustaine said in a prepared statement. "I believe I have delivered."
As previously reported, Megadeth will hit the tour trail next weekend with the Ronnie James Dio-era version of Black Sabbath, the latter of whom are touring under the moniker Heaven & Hell.
MTV and Latin spin-off MTV Tr3s will document the making of a new incarnation of Latin boy-band Menudo via a pair of upcoming reality series.
MTV Tr3s gets things started with the May 12 premiere of "Road to Menudo," which will chronicle the screening of thousands of hopefuls, who will be narrowed down to a group of seven finalists, according to a press release. MTV's flagship channel will follow-up with a second, yet-to-be named, 10-episode series that will premiere in the fall, over the course of which the band will be culled to five members.
Auditions will take place March 31 in Los Angeles, April 14 in Miami, April 21 in Dallas, and April 28 in New York. Additional details are available at MTV Tr3s' website.
The NAACP honored "Dreamgirls - Music from the Motion Picture" with the award for Outstanding Soundtrack during its annual awards ceremony, which took place Friday (3/2).
