SXSW Review: Public Enemy at Town Lake

The First Amendment is apparently alive and well, as evidenced by Public Enemy 's Saturday (3/16) performance at the Town Lake stage, during which the inimitable Flavor Flav led the crowd in a chant of "F--- George Bush," practically in the shadow of the building where the Texan president once served as governor.

Judging from the size of the audience--which measured in the thousands, and filled the entire field from front to back--it's possible the president actually heard the chant in D.C. ... along with similar chants for Vice President Dick Cheney, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and the Iraq War in general. The call-response bash session was part of "Son of a Bush," a cut featured on PE's 2002 album "Revolverlution."

The real highlights, though, were the seminal rap group's incendiary delivery of classics "Bring the Noise," "Can't Truss It" and the Flavor Flav staple "911 Is a Joke." Hearing Chuck D's commanding, militant, baritone flow--which he still uses to deliver believably earnest, rage-full, and simultaneously cool-as-hell anti-establishment screeds--and listening to Flavor Flav offer up a full-on "Yeahhhh, boyeeee!" while sporting a full-size clock around his neck are the hip-hop equivalent of visiting a national monument.
