Static-X to serve up bits of 'Cannibal' on tour
Static-X lead-singer/guitarist Wayne Static is a true believer in giving fans what they want. So, during the initial tour dates behind his band's forthcoming album, "Cannibal," he and his band are playing only four new songs.
"We try to play a little bit off of every record," Static told LiveDaily. "I feel very strongly about that. That's why people come back to see us. We never forget the first stuff that we did. I think the bands that have the long touring careers are the ones that cover their whole career.
"People want to hear the old stuff, too. There are people who don't like our new stuff. There are people who only like our first album ['Wisconsin Death Trip']. If we play four or five songs off the first album, they'll always pay you $25 to come see us, so I'm fine with that. Like, 'Whatever you want. I don't care. Just keep going to shows,'" he added with a laugh.
Regardless, Static-X--which also includes guitarist Koichi Fukuda, drummer Nick Oshiro and bassist Tony Campos--will celebrate the release of "Cannibal" April 3. After a year and a half of sitting at home, Static-X will hit the road for an 11-week jaunt March 30. Details about the confirmed shows are listed below. Static said more dates will be announced at the group's MySpace page as they are confirmed.
"We're going to play everywhere," he said. "We've only been releasing dates just before they go on sale, just in case we need to make any adjustments to the schedule."
Static co-produced "Cannibal" with John Travis (Sugar Ray, Kid Rock), who also engineered and mixed.
"I've co-produced everything, whether my name has been on there or not," Static said. "It's always my baby. I'm the main songwriter. I always make sure I'm very, very involved in every step. This time, I decided to step up and make sure I was there for every minute of the recording process, and really get involved to the maximum degree."
"Cannibal" marks Fukuda's return to guitar. An original member of Static-X, Fukuda left the band then returned to write keyboard parts for 2005's "Start a War." He was replaced during that time by Dope's Tripp Eisen.
"We brought Kiochi in just because we thought it would be fun and I hadn't talked to him in a long time back then," Static said. "He was just on board to do some of the keyboards, and it turned out we needed a guitar player before the record was even done and he rejoined the band."
Eisen was kicked out of the band after he was arrested twice for crimes against children, including sexual assault and kidnapping. He served time in prison.
Fukuda's presence in the band for "Cannibal" opened the door for Static-X to feature guitar solos, which are prominent on the album.
"That was his main contribution," Static said. "I wanted to do it for years and years. You really have to have an amazing guitar player these days if you're going to put solos on your record. They have to be over the top."
Static explained "Cannibal" carries the feel of material found early in the band's 13-year career.
"It definitely harkens back to the older material in the simplicity and the heaviness of it and the vocal styling in a lot of ways. But it's definitely not a rehash of anything. It's definitely pushed in new directions. I really wanted to make this more of a metal record, more of a guitar record," Static said.
"It seemed like a good thing to do. Usually, when I go about starting to write for the new record, I just sort of get in there and start doing whatever feels good. 'Cannibal' is the first song that I actually wrote. I thought, 'Wow. This is really cool. Let's keep pushing in this direction.' That kind of set the tone."
