Warrants issued for Billy Joe Shaver in shooting

Arrest warrants have been issued for country music veteran Billy Joe Shaver , who apparently shot and wounded a man outside a Texas bar Saturday night (3/31).

Shaver attempted to surrender to Austin police Monday (4/2), but was not arrested because authorities in that city did not have a record of the warrants, Shaver's attorney, Joseph Turner, told the Associated Press.

Shaver was leaving Papa Joe's Texas Saloon in Lorena, about 80 miles north of Austin, when a drunk stranger with a knife followed him into the parking lot, Turner said, adding that Shaver shot the man in self defense. The bullet hit the man in the cheek, but he was talking and alert afterwards, police told AP. He was hospitalized.

Police in Lorena issued the arrest warrant on charges of aggravated assault and possessing a firearm in a prohibited place, Turner told AP.

"We're working with the police to get this resolved," the attorney said. "[Shaver's] priority is dealing with this issue."

Meanwhile, Music World Entertainment/Compadre Records is going forward with the release of Shaver's new "Greatest Hits" album tomorrow (4/3).

"At this time, no charges have been filed and Billy Joe is expected to honor all scheduled concert performances and his promotional schedule for his new album release ...," Music World Entertainment chief Mathew Knowles said in a statement.

Shaver has tour dates through August in Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, Missouri, New York and Minnesota. Details are listed below.

"Greatest Hits" marks the first time in his four-decade career that Shaver has compiled his most popular songs, according to a press release. The 18-song set, which includes "Georgia on a Fast Train" and "Old Chunk of Coal," also introduces two previously unreleased songs: "Melody" and "Light a Candle for Me." The latter was recorded during sessions for Shaver's latest studio album, 2005's "The Real Deal."

The five-time Grammy nominee has recorded more than 20 albums and has had his songs covered by Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, George Jones, Bob Dylan, The Allman Brothers Band and Waylon Jennings, to name a few.

His accolades include the Americana Music Association's Songwriter Lifetime Achievement Award and induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
