Strummer Won't Play At Dury Benefit

LONDON--Former Clash frontman Joe Strummer has decided not to play at the upcoming Ian Dury benefit to be held in London on June 16.

Strummer gave no official reason when he pulled out of the gig last Friday (5/12). A spokesperson for the benefit told LiveDaily, "I think [Strummer] may be sensitive about people getting the wrong idea that the Clash are to reform and doesn't want people buying tickets for the wrong reasons. It's a real disappointment as Joe was a major part of the bill. I know Ian Dury would have liked him to have participated." Strummer's name has now been taken off all artwork promoting the gig.

A piece in the U.K.'s Daily Mirror suggested that Strummer, Mick Jones and Topper Headon, who were all scheduled to perform separately at the show, would play a set as the Clash.

Published reports stating that former Clash bassist Paul Simonon had been added to the bill have also proved to be false.

Other stars performing at A Tribute to Ian Dury, which will raise money for the British cancer charity BACup, include Robbie Williams, former Sex Pistol Glen Matlock, Neneh Cherry and Kirsty MacColl.
