Akon says tour with 50 Cent in the works

When reggae-inspired singer/rapper Akon wraps up his dates with Gwen Stefani , he plans to team up with powerhouse rapper 50 Cent for a US tour, the Senegalese musician/producer told LiveDaily.

"Domestically, I'm gong to co-headline with 50 Cent," Akon said. "We definitely are looking to drop some heads on that tour."

Dates have yet to be announced, but he said the worldwide tour will feature different openers in various parts of the globe.

Akon currently is touring in support of his Top 10 album "Konvicted," which spawned the hit "Smack That," featuring Eminem. Working with Eminem was a dream come true for Akon, who grew up in Senegal and the United States.

"Oh, man, that was an honor--that was, like, one of the heights of my career," Akon said. "I think me hooking up with Eminem definitely helped me to advance in my career in a big way. I always feel he's one of the best rappers out there.

"He always made records that capture every genre. He always made different types of records--a party record, a club record, a story record, a comedy record. He always had all types of records on his album. I always admired how he switched up his style."

But don't expect Akon to take many tips from Slim Shady; he's already defined his own style.

"That's just me admiring what he does. But it would never affect what I do. I felt like, as an artist, I always had my own identity, and I plan to keep it that way. There's always going to be artists that I admire, but it won't influence me to jump on that particular bandwagon of any sort. It allows me to be better at what it is I do."

Instead, Akon looks up to his father, Mor Thiam, a jazz percussionist, and his work ethic. His father's vast music library opened Akon's eyes to other sorts of music.

"I listen to everything from hip-hop and R&B to country to you name it--all the way down to calypso, reggae and alternative. I listen to everything."

He is also inspired by his own works, he admitted.

"Musically, I was always influenced by my last record. Whatever last record I made, it only made me want to make a bigger record than that particular record. I definitely have more drive and more energy to do better than what I've already accomplished," he said.

Akon, who will be the subject of a biopic starring "ER" and "8 Mile's" Mekhi Phifer, said he knew when he wrote "Smack That" that it was going to be nothing short of a hit. Same with his collaboration with Gwen Stefani , the Akon-produced "The Sweet Escape."

"Every time I make a record, I always make it with the intention with thinking and hoping it reaches for the top. We always prepare for the best, rather than the worst. That's why I keep dropping records after records after records--even with schedules. We make sure we're at every appearance and everything. It was definitely something we hoped that would happen that way. And we're just blessed that it did," he said.

Besides being a prolific songwriter, Akon is a successful producer, having turned the knobs for Chamillionaire and Young Jeezy, among others. Currently, he's writing songs for a new Whitney Houston project.

"I have a studio bus and my personal bus. Even while I'm on the road I'm creating some records. Right now, I'm working on the Whitney Houston project. It's going great. Right now, it's me doing more on the creative side of things. We're coming up with songs that I feel are relevant to come out now. It's always good to be a part of something that's creative that stems from music itself. Whenever I get pioneer-like projects like that, I always want to be a part of it."
