Swedish songwriter Max Martin took top honors at the 17th Annual Pop Music Awards in Los Angeles on Monday night (5/22), winning the Songwriter of the Year award for the second straight year.

Martin wrote or co-wrote four of the award-winning songs named in the Most Performed Songs category: "As Long as You Love Me" (Backstreet Boys), "Baby One More Time" (Britney Spears), "I Want It That Way " (Backstreet Boys) and "Tearin' up My Heart" ('N Sync). Last year, Martin won for penning "As Long as You Love Me," "I Want You Back" (N'Sync), "Quit Playing Games with My Heart" (Backstreet Boys) and "Show Me Love" (Robyn).

Songwriters who received Most Performed Songs awards included Lenny Kravitz for "Fly Away" and Everlast for "What It's Like." The winners in this category are chosen based on a year-long ASCAP survey of radio, television and other media outlets.

John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls received the Song of the Year award for the band's hit "Slide," while EMI took Publisher of the Year for the label's 14 award-winning songs, including "Genie in a Bottle" (Christina Aguilera) and "No Scrubs" (TLC). The ASCAP College Radio Award went to the band Built to Spill.

Steely Dan members Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were presented with the ASCAP Founders Award, the organization's lifetime achievement honor. Fagen and Becker classics include: "Reelin" in the Years," "Do It Again," "Peg," "FM," "Hey 19" and "Rikki, Don't Lose That Number."
