Smashing Pumpkins debut in France, premiere new single
Resurrected rockers Smashing Pumpkins took to the stage tonight (5/22) before 2,200 fans at the Grand Rex Theatre in Paris, marking the group's first performance in more than six years.
According to a press release, the group--which is playing dates in Europe in advance of a pair of US residencies--played a three hour set consisting of material from its forthcoming album, "Zeitgeist," as well as many of the well-known songs from the Pumpkins catalog.
The show marked the live debut of the band's new lineup, which features frontman/guitarist Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin, as well as newcomers Ginger Reyes (bass) and Jeff Schroeder (guitar). Former Pumpkins' guitarist James Iha and bassist D'Arcy Wretzky exited the group on bad terms several years ago.
Meanwhile, the Pumpkins have added a few new dates to their San Francisco residency while weathering a computer glitch that stopped sales of the band's upcoming stretch in Asheville, NC.
Citing "overwhelming demand," the band announced in a press release that the computer handling ticket purchases for the group's nine-show residency at Asheville's Orange Peel suffered a meltdown last Sunday (5/20), forcing the club to stop taking orders. The problem has since been sorted out, and tickets for all Asheville shows have since sold out, according to the venue's website.
Also, San Francisco's Fillmore, which hasn't seen the Pumpkins since they were invited to reopen the historic venue in 1994, will get a few more shows, increasing the band's residency in that city to 11 shows, running from July 15 to Aug. 1.
During the residency gigs, the Pumpkins will mix up their set list from night to night, performing songs from "Zeitgeist" and band classics, as well as retooled tunes that didn't make it onto the new album. They'll also offer up songs written the day of show, according to a press release.
"Zeitgeist," the Pumpkins' sixth album and first set of new material since 2000's "Machina/The Machines of God," is scheduled to hit the streets July 10. The record, produced by Corgan and Chamberlin, represents the culmination of two years of work, according to a press release.
"Tarantula," the first single from the new album, received its world premiere last Friday (5/18) on Los Angeles radio station KROQ, "sparking a national craze when devoted Pumpkins fans recorded and posted low-quality versions of the single online," according to a press release put out by the band. In response to the demand, the group rushed out a high-quality digital version to radio stations over the weekend so they could begin playing it ahead of its official release date.
The band is set to headline several European festivals into mid-June. Following the residencies and the July 7 Live Earth concert in East Rutherford, NJ, the Pumpkins will play festivals in Baltimore, Montreal and Toronto, plus a few more in Europe.
