Pink Martini seduces North America this summer
Genre-bending, 12-piece band Pink Martini will take its multilingual show on a North American tour of theaters and symphony halls this summer.
The Portland, OR-based group, which just released its new album, "Hey Eugene!," will kick off the outing June 13 with its first headlining show at New York City's Carnegie Hall. The trek moves from the East Coast to the West Coast, wrapping Sept. 20 after a five-show run in California. Multiple dates are booked in San Francisco; Seattle; Portland, OR; Los Angeles; and San Diego. The itinerary is listed below.
"Hey Eugene!," Pink Martini's third set, comprises 12 songs sung in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese, and also includes the band's first foray into the Arabic language. The record comprises elements of pop, swing, cabaret, Latin-rhythms and romantic old-Hollywood-style ballads. Jazz legend Jimmy Scott joins lead vocalist China Forbes on the song "Tea for Two." Sample tracks are streaming at Pink Martini's website.
"We're kind of like musical archaeologists, bringing melodies and rhythms from different parts of the world together to create something which is modern," band founder and pianist Thomas Lauderdale said in a statement. "It's like an urban musical travelogue ... and I think as citizens of the
world and in a sense as musical ambassadors for the United States, we must always strive to study the languages, customs and histories of other countries."
Lauderdale, a Harvard graduate and classically trained pianist, created the band in 1994 and recruited classmate Forbes the following year. Pink Martini grew from a quintet to the current 12-piece ensemble, which has performed its diverse repertoire with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, Canada and the US.
With its first two albums, 1997's "Sympathique" and 2004's "Hang on Little Tomato," Pink Martini has built a cult following, selling 1.3 million albums worldwide on its own independent Heinz Records label, according to a press release.
