Highfalutin 'Social' offers five big-name concerts for $15,000
While some industry types are trying to combat the skyrocketing cost of concert tickets, one promoter is seeing how far he can push it, offering up a five-show "ultimate rock 'n' roll fantasy" that costs $15,000 per person.
The "Social" concert series will host Prince July 14, Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds July 28, Billy Joel Aug. 4, James Taylor Aug. 11 and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Aug. 25 at The Ross School in East Hampton, NY.
The outdoor performances will be limited to 1,000 guests, all considered VIPs, and will include luxurious lounges, personal service and "a first-class culinary experience catered by the world's best chefs," according to a press release.
Organizers say the concert experience is designed for complete comfort without compromise, calling it "a couture approach to live events."
"Our goal is to provide maximum attractions with minimum distraction," the event's website says. "Social offers the opportunity to see huge stars in small venues. Legendary musicians who sell out stadiums play in intimate and refined settings. There are no barriers to block the purity of the performance."
As for the steep price tag, Bulldog Island Events promoter Joe Meli told The Wall Street Journal the cost is in line with secondary market sales. For instance, 10th-row tickets to the Jimmy Buffett concert at New York City's Madison Square Garden this September are being offered by ticket reseller StubHub for $2,995, the paper said. It added that in March, one concertgoer paid $11,000 for two front-row seats to Elton John's 60th birthday bash at the same venue.
Meli told the Journal that some of the $15,000 tickets have been sold but declined to say how many. A publicist LiveDaily contacted would not comment on sales figures.
Ticket information is available at Social's website. At the moment, "Social Passports" are available only in the five-concert, $15,000 package deal. Upon purchase, buyers must agree to not re-sell their tickets.
The East Hampton series is the debut Social event and there are plans to take the VIP experience to Miami, Los Angeles, Dubai, Paris, Saint-Tropez, London and Tokyo.
