Briefly: U2, Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris, Styx, George Michael
U2 continues to work on its follow-up to 2004's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb," with the group most recently spending time songwriting in Morocco with longtime friends/producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois.
"It's the first time we've worked with Brian and Dan in a purely songwriting capacity," drummer Larry Mullen Jr. said in a message posted at the band's website. "So it's very different, quite experimental and kind of liberating because of that."
Frontman Bono tempered expectations about if, when or where the new music might surface.
"We have no plans for the music yet," he said. "We're just going to make it until we can't not put it out!"
As previously reported, this month will see the DVD release of "PopMart Live from Mexico City"; originally released on VHS in 1998, the flick was filmed during the group's 1997 PopMart tour. The disc hits shelves June 26.
Lyle Lovett , Emmylou Harris , Shawn Colvin, John Hiatt, Patty Griffin and Buddy Miller will headline "Cayamo: A Journey Through Song," a six-day Caribbean cruise scheduled to set sail from Miami on Feb. 4, 2008, according to a press release. Tickets go on sale to the general public June 25. Details are available at the event's website.
Styx has been tapped to perform at Spike TV's first-annual "Guys Choice" awards ceremony, during which the band will participate in a tribute to comedian Adam Sandler, whom Spike TV's viewers have deemed the ultimate "Guy's Guy," according to a press release. The taped-for-broadcast event takes place June 9, and will air June 13.
George Michael today (6/8) was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and banned from driving for two years after pleading guilty last month to a charge of "driving while unfit through drugs," the Associated Press reports. The sentence stems from an Oct. 2, 2006 incident in London during which police found the 43-year-old pop star slumped behind the wheel of his car after they responded to reports of his vehicle drifting onto the wrong side of the road.
