Fun Lovin' Criminals Showcase New Material In Strong LA Performance

The New York trio Fun Lovin' Criminals started their night out at the Hollywood Athletic Club in Los Angeles, representin' their hometown of NYC by blasting Sinatra's New York, New York over the sound system as they made their grand entrance through a cloud of smoke. Cigarette in mouth, frontman and guitarist Huey (for the record, FLC claim not to have last names) in a strong NY accent, greeted the audience and went straight into Bombin' the L from their debut album, Come Find Yourself.

Two years after their first release, FLC are hitting the states in support of their just released 100% Colombian. In the current lineup, Mackie, replaces original drummer Steve who is on a leave of absence, and Fast plays bass.

FLC once again combines their street-wise humor with jazzed-up funk and hip-hop-influenced beats, but this time around is focusing on a smoother, R&B, after hours-type feel.

Much of the evening showcased new material from 100% Colombian, placing the spotlight on Huey's suave, deep voice and charming rhymes. Even through the fuzzy sound system, the musicianship of the band was still able to sound as if there were more than three people on stage during songs like, Big Night Out, Up On the Hill, All For Self and King of New York.

In typical L.A. fashion, the crowd -- which represented a wide sampling of American culturular types -- appeared to be enjoying the 90-minute performance, but was unwilling to show their appreciation, even as FLC repeatedly expressed their happiness to be back in L.A.

Commenting between songs, Huey spoke directly to people in the audience and voiced his opinion on the non-smoking law in Southern California as he lit cigarette after cigarette.

Playing a few of their more guitar-driven songs like Korean Bodega and Southside, the band also played a more rock-influenced version of Fun Lovin' Criminals. Returning for one encore, the FLC closed the night with the B.B. King duet, Mini Bar Blues.
