Social Distortion preps for 'Greatest Hits' with more gigs

Social Distortion has expanded its summer tour, adding more headline shows and several festival gigs to the itinerary.

The Southern California punk icons, who finished a spring tour of the US and Canada last month, will resume their headlining trek June 29 in Urbana, IL, with fellow punk rockers The Hangmen and The Heart Attacks opening. From there, they'll criss-cross the US, stopping by Milwaukee's Summerfest, Irvine, CA's Hootenanny and a few radio festivals along the way. The outing is set to wrap Aug. 11 at a radio show in Englewood, CO. Details are listed below.

Meanwhile, Social Distortion is getting ready for the June 26 release of its first career-spanning, best-of album. In addition to the CD version, the set will also be released in a limited-edition vinyl version featuring a bonus interview with frontman Mike Ness.

The retrospective, titled "Greatest Hits," covers three decades worth of material, from the early So-Cal punk track "Mommy's Little Monster" to the 2004 radio hit "Reach for the Sky." It also introduces one new song: "Far Behind," which is streaming at Social D's MySpace page. The set's track-listing includes '90s mainstream singles "Story of My Life," "Ball and Chain" and "I Was Wrong," in addition to the band's cover of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire."

Social Distortion's most recent studio album, 2004's "Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll," marked its first collection of new material since 1996's "White Light, White Heat, White Trash." It was also the band's first recording without founding member Dennis Danell, who died of a brain aneurysm in 2000.

Social D's current lineup includes Ness--the only constant member--along with guitarist Jonny Wickersham, drummer Charlie Quintana and bassist Brent Harding.
