Live Earth continues to expand US lineup
Country star Keith Urban and alt-rockers Taking Back Sunday are the latest acts to join the US installment of next month's 24-hour, seven-continent Live Earth concert, which aims to bring attention to the climate crisis.
Urban will take time out of his "Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy World Tour" to appear at the July 7 event at New Jersey's Giants Stadium.
"Global warming is something that will ultimately affect all of us on this planet," Urban said in a statement. "And if there is one thing that music can do, it is to bring people together despite their politics or differences."
New York-based Taking Back Sunday has been a role model on the issue of global warming, implementing eco-friendly standards on its tours including recycling, organic-cotton merchandise alternatives, tree planting, carbon-offsetting programs and messaging campaigns, according to a press release.
"We all have our own beliefs, but I really feel that the issue of global warming is not a political issue up for debate," Taking Back Sunday guitarist Fred Mascherino said in a statement. "It's strictly a case of our survival in the near future, and it is proven scientific fact. The truth is that the more we know, the more hope we all have."
A few days ago, it was also announced that Metallica , Kasabian , Pussycat Dolls and Terra Naomi are the final acts added to the UK show.
The global concert will begin at Sydney's Aussie Stadium and continue across the continents with shows at Tokyo's Tokyo Dome; Shanghai's Oriental Pearl Tower; Johannesburg, South Africa's Cradle of Human Kind; London's Wembly Stadium; Hamburg, Germany's HSH Nordbank Arena; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's Copacabana Beach; and the finale at East Rutherford, NJ's Giants Stadium. The lineup for each city is listed below.
Another Live Earth gig planned for Istanbul, Turkey, was recently canceled, according to Billboard, which said the Turkish press blamed a lack of governmental support and a failure to attract sponsorship from big businesses. Organizers are now seeking a site to erect giant screens in the city to show feeds from the other shows, the magazine reported. However, the promotions company behind the Turkish show reportedly said it was still willing to stage the concert if it could drum up the governmental support.
All the concerts will stream live at Live Earth's website and portions will air on NBC-TV in the US and on more than 120 television networks around the world, according to organizers, who expect an audience of more than 2 billion.
