Briefly: Joe Satriani, Willie Nelson, KMFDM, Sheryl Crow
Guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani will mark the 20th anniversary of his breakthrough album, "Surfing with the Alien," by releasing a revamped version of the set and playing a trio of club shows around the country.
Satriani's brief itinerary comprises shows Aug. 15 at New York City's Gramercy Theatre, Aug. 16 at Chicago's House of Blues and Aug. 17 at West Hollywood, CA's Roxy Theatre. Additionally, the guitarist will perform Aug. 18 at San Francisco's Hyde Street Studio, where he recorded "Surfing with the Alien"; 20 contest winners will be selected to attend the show. Additional details are available at Satriani's website.
On Aug. 7, Epic/Legacy Recordings will issue a two-disc expanded edition of "Surfing with the Alien," which will feature a remastered version of the original album, as well as previously unreleased concert video filmed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1988. The set will also include new liner notes penned by Satriani.
Country legend Willie Nelson will be honored as a BMI Icon at the US performing-rights organization's 55th annual Country Awards, a private event set for Nov. 6. The Icon designation is given to BMI songwriters and artists who have had "a unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers," according to a press release.
Nelson joins a list of past honorees that includes Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Whisperin' Bill Anderson, Charlie Daniels and Loretta Lynn.
Industrial rockers KMFDM have announced an Aug. 21 release date for their 15th studio album, "Tohuvabohu." The title is "an Old Testament word meaning 'wild and chaotic,'" according to a press release. The album features songs sung in German, Spanish, Latin, Hebrew and Lingala, as well as a Spanish-language cover of German group Liasons Dangereuses' "Los Ninos Del Parque." More information about the album, including cover art, is posted at KMFDM's website.
Sheryl Crow has agreed to appear in both print and television public-service announcements in support of the 14th annual QVC Presents "FFANY Shoes on Sale," a breast-cancer fundraising event, which airs live on QVC Oct. 17 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET, according to a press release.
"This disease has touched my life personally and unfortunately there are so many women receiving the same diagnosis every day," said Crow, a breast-cancer survivor. "I am thrilled to be able to offer my support for QVC Presents 'FFANY Shoes on Sale.' The funds raised from this event have helped me and so many women in the fight against breast cancer."
