The 26-year-old Smith--who was released from Riker's Island prison on $250,000 bail after her manager put up his home as collateral, according to the New York Daily News--is accused of shooting 23-year-old Makeda Barnes-Joseph twice in the midsection early Saturday following an argument over $2,000 that Smith believed Barnes-Joseph had stolen from her, according to various reports. Smith allegedly fled the scene in a Cadillac Escalade that she subsequently abandoned after it crashed into a parked car several blocks away.
Smith turned herself in to authorities Saturday night. Barnes-Joseph is reportedly in stable condition.
Veteran Latin pop singer Gloria Estefan has announced a Sept. 18 release date for a new Spanish-language album titled "90 Millas." The set features a lengthy list of Latin guest musicians, including Carlos Santana, Sheila E., Jose Feliciano, Johnny Pacheco, Arturo Sandoval, La India, Cachao and Chocolate, according to a press release.
"It is so important for me to keep authentic Cuban sounds alive," Estefan said in a prepared statement. "All these great artists have changed the landscape of Latin music and it's an honor to have them on this album. I believe this album will expose a new generation to the richness of Cuban music."
Talib Kweli , who announced in early May that his new album, "Eardrum," would land in stores July 24, has pushed the release date back until Aug. 21. As previously reported, the forthcoming set features production assistance from Kanye West, Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am, Madlib and Hi-Tek.
Guests on the album include Norah Jones, Jean Grae and UGK, according to Warner Bros. Records, which is issuing the release on Kweli's new imprint, Blacksmith Music.
Finnish rockers H.I.M. have penciled in a September release for their sophomore full-length, which will bear the title "Venus Doom." The group recorded the set with producer Tim Palmer (U2, Switchfoot) and co-producer Hiili Hiilesmaa at Finnvox Studios in Finland; Palmer also worked on the group's 2005 set, "Dark Light."
As previously reported, H.I.M. will spend much of the summer on the road as park of Linkin Park's Projekt Revolution tour.
