White Stripes leave Canada with note of finality
Continuing the band's desire to play every province and territory of Canada, The White Stripes gave fans in Newfoundland exactly one note to remember them by Monday (7/16).
The one-note concert in St. John's was actually a "secret" show the duo of guitarist Jack White and drummer Meg White played hours before the final concert of their Canadian visit. Local fans were told to expect only one note, and the band provided it.
Video of the "concert" circulating on You Tube and various online outlets shows the pair walking onstage clad in their usual red and white livery. As drummer Meg sits down at her kit, former spouse Jack slings his guitar over his shoulder, winds up and delivers the note ("reportedly a C-sharp," wrote the CBC News) as the crowd cheers wildly. The two then clasp hands in front of the microphone as Jack announces, to more applause," that the pair has "now officially played in every province and territory of Canada."
The strange appearance marked the latest in a string of odd shows the duo has given during their Canadian adventure, with exotic, impromptu settings including a Winnipeg bridge and a pool hall in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The duo went on to play a regularly scheduled show later Monday night in St. John's that left no one disappointed, according to music reporter Zach Goudie of the CBC. "I don't think you'll hear too many people whining," Goudie said on the CBC's website. In light of the final concert, he added, "the one-second secret show seems funny, instead of disappointing."
The Stripes continue to tour in support of their latest album, "Icky Thump," which hit stores in June. The band kicks off the US portion of the itinerary Sunday (7/22) in Cumberland, ME, with a schedule that runs late into September. All dates are included below.
"Icky Thump" is The White Stripes' sixth studio effort and follows 2005's "Get Behind Me Satan," which won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. The title track from the new set is streaming at The White Stripes' MySpace page.
